About Bananas

  • It is the main agricultural export product of Magdalena.
  • Magdalena accounts for 35.5% of Colombia’s banana exports.
  • 29% of the products exported through Santa Marta’s customs are fresh plantains and bananas.
  • The main export markets are Europe (82.2%) and North America (17.4%).
  • Contributes approximately 43.7% of the departmental GDP.

About Coffee

  • In Magdalena, coffee is cultivated by peasant, Indigenous, and Afro-descendant communities across approximately 17,917 hectares of Arabica coffee.
  • The main coffee varieties include Castillo, Colombia, Caturra, Típica, Cenicafé 1, and Tabí.
    There are around 5,178 farms dedicated to coffee production.
  • Magdalena has 17,671 hectares available for coffee cultivation.
  • It is the fifth most exported product through the Port of Santa Marta.
  • Over the last five years, coffee has been the second most economically significant product in the region.
  • 12,000 hectares of coffee plantations are certified as sustainable coffee farming.

About Palm Oil

  • Magdalena has approximately 42,181 hectares of palm plantations.
  • 15 out of 30 municipalities in the department are dedicated to palm cultivation.
  • Crude palm oil production accounts for 5% of the national total (112,637 tons).
  • 501 palm growers are certified by the RNP, and there are 7 operational processing hubs.
  • Productivity reaches 2.9 tons of crude palm oil per hectare.
  • It is the third most exported product through the Port of Santa Marta, with over 929,959 tons exported in the last five years.
  • The palm industry generates approximately 15,442 direct and indirect jobs per year.
